As the weather starts to change and people start to get into the fall season, let's remember some basic things to do before we pick up our instruments.
1-Make sure you warm up your hands, fingers and wrist before you start playing. Start slowly and pick up the pace as you go. By not warming up, just as in any activity, you could end up hurting yourself. Make sure you do your finger exercises and finger stretches, they really do help. 2-Keep your fingernails on your fret hand short. Otherwise, your nails will get in the way and you will not be able to play the notes clearly. 3-Make sure your hands are clean. Your hands build up sweat and dirt just from playing so don't start off with dirty hands. 4-Wipe down the guitar neck and fret board when you are done playing. This keeps the guitar neck clean and will prolong the life of the strings. 5-If you find that your hands, wrist and/or arm start to get a shooting pain stop playing for an hour or so....If the pain continues after you pick the guitar back up, stop for the rest of the day. Pain is the way your body is telling you something is wrong. Listen to it. When you pick it back up, pay attention to the way you are sitting, standing, holding the guitar. Are you holding the guitar the right way? How is your fretting hand wrapped around the neck. Double check these things before you starting playing again. 6-Be patient with yourself and do not get frustrated. This is suppose to be fun and exciting. You can not expect to be a master at it overnight, well you can expect it but it won't happen. So go slowly and do it everyday.
